I’m dreaming of a ….great diner!
We did a breakfast show awhile back and were called to task for not including Dream Diner in Tyngsboro, MA. Having never been, we embarked on a diner adventure. For starters, the owner Marybeth Shanahan comes from diner royalty. Her mother is one of the 4 sisters of the Owl Diner fame in Lowell. Marybeth has owned Dream Diner since 1997 and recently completed a renovation on the building that replicates an authentic stainless steel diner reminiscent of the 1940’s. And that’s not all that brings you back in time. From the diner menu with breakfast served all day, to the friendliness of the staff and the figure of Marybeth flying around the place in her turquoise uniform you will feel like you are in an earlier time.
We ordered a combination of breakfast and lunch. The standard eggs Benedict has a thick slice of ham steak and homemade hollandaise. The ham is one of the diner’s specialties and it is juicy and delicious. We also sampled the cinnamon bun french toast which was as good as it sounds. The grilled patty melt is the real sleeper here. I will never be able to come here without getting this patty melt. It is the perfect version of that great diner sandwich. The bread is grilled perfectly without being greasy, the burger is tasty and cooked to perfection and it is heaped with the most beautifully caramelized onions you can imagine. I have not had one this good in many, many years.
Dream Diner offers over 40 different omelets, 12 kinds of eggs benedicts in addition to many other diner delights. Coffee is better than the standard diner. They have about 150 seats but it does get very busy during peak times. So do yourself a favor and go during less busy times. One, it will be a lot quicker and two, you may get to have a conversation with the owner, Marybeth and I promise that is a treat in itself. Dream Diner is located at 384 Middlesex Rd, Tyngsboro, MAHours are Monday-Friday 7am-2pm and weekends 7am-1pm www.dreamdiner.com
