We stopped at The Stage Restaurant and Cafe In Downtown Keene, NH and honestly was not expecting much. And boy were we pleasantly surprised. Inside looks like a pub tavern and you would kind of expect frozen pre-made pub food. But no, everything is made in house from scratch.
We started with Crab fritters w/ chipotle remoulade because Sharon has never met a crab cake she doesn’t like. Normally fritters are a bit doughy but these were more like a crab cake. Nice flavor of crab. Tomato cheddar soup IS really a thing, who knew. You combine cream of tomato soup and some really nice cheddar and you get one fantastic soup. Chicken and kielbasa from Hell, with Toscana bread was next. Nice toasty bread with spicy grilled chicken and kielbasa. It was good, but we would have preferred just kielbasa.
We both had burgers, cooked rare with a capital R. I have to say one of my top ten burgers. Great mix of meat for flavor, cooked to perfection, nice sharp cheddar, great bun. We could not have been happier. We also split a Country Chicken salad which I have to say was a sleeper. With ham, fried chicken, cheddar, fresh greens, boiled egg and honey Dijon ranch dressing. I have to say, I would absolutely order that again. I was going to say I would have it as my main course but we all know that really isn’t going to happen. They also have several steak and chicken entrees and the lamb chops with mint peppercorn sauce sounds delish.
Coconut cream pie is a customer favorite. Decent wine list, lots of specialty cocktails. Weekend brunch looks fantastic with homemade corned beef hash with hollandaise made in house, homemade pancakes and waffles, omelets and more.
